It's tempting to just pick the fastest available tier "to be safe," but for a lot of households that means paying for speed you'll rarely notice using. A little honest accounting about how you actually use the internet goes a long way toward picking the right tier.

Start with device count, not just people count

It's less about how many people live in your home and more about how many devices are actively using the connection at once — phones, laptops, smart TVs, gaming consoles, and smart home devices all add up, even ones that aren't being "actively" used at a given moment.

Streaming quality matters more than streaming count

A single 4K stream uses meaningfully more bandwidth than a single HD stream. If your household frequently streams in 4K on multiple devices simultaneously, that pushes you toward a higher tier faster than simple device count alone would suggest.

Upload speed matters if you work from home or game online

Video calls, cloud backups, and online gaming all depend on upload speed, not just download speed. If your household does a lot of video conferencing or competitive online gaming, it's worth checking a plan's upload speed specifically, not just the headline download number.

When the top tier genuinely makes sense

Larger households with many simultaneous 4K streams, frequent large file uploads or downloads, or several people working from home at once are the clearest cases where a gigabit-class tier pays off in a noticeable way rather than being unused headroom.

The fastest available tier isn't wrong for everyone — it's just not automatically right for everyone either. A few minutes of honest use-case accounting beats guessing.

A simple checklist

  • How many devices are typically active on the network at the same time?
  • How much of your streaming is in 4K versus HD or lower?
  • Does anyone in the household regularly video call, upload large files, or game online competitively?
  • Have you actually run a speed test on your current plan to see if you're already hitting its limits?
